Most people think trust is something you earn once and keep. It isn’t. The idea of trust decay is the premise behind my book, Borrow Trust.
I was more nervous about launching my first book than I thought I would be.
I think it's because, unlike giving a presentation, posting content, running ads or writing my newsletter every week, writing a book is a full story arc in itself.
I cut 15,000 words from the final copy to make it as simple as I could, so readers get the most succinct thinking and the best results from it. I wrote it one summer, then sat on it far too long trying to make it "perfect".
This is the idea at the centre of it.
Most people think trust is something you earn once and keep.
You did the work. You got the result. They trust you. Job done.
Except that's not how trust works. Trust decays.
Every day that passes without a touchpoint, your trust balance drops a little. Not because anyone's decided you're untrustworthy. Just because attention moves on, memory fades, and someone new is filling the silence you left behind.
I see this constantly with clients who built a strong personal brand, got busy, went quiet for six weeks, and can't work out why the leads dried up.
Nothing broke. Trust just decayed.
When I started teaching this, here's what surprised me: cold traffic and warm traffic aren't two different audiences. They're two different trust balances.
A "cold" stranger who's watched ten of your videos this week can trust you more than a "warm" past client who hasn't heard from you in six months.
Warmth isn't a label. It's a rate of decay.
The real job isn't building trust once. It's building a system that keeps depositing it, consistently, publicly, at scale, faster than it decays.
That idea, how to systemise trust so it compounds instead of decaying, is the entire premise behind my book, Borrow Trust. It's also what our clients use to scale their coaching and consulting businesses predictably.
